Men’s soccer: VMI drops home finale

AFP

vmi_logoPlaying in the final home game of the 2015 season, the VMI men’s soccer team dropped a 6-0 contest to visiting Wofford College Saturday afternoon at Patchin Field.

The game marked Senior Day for five senior cadet-athletes in Alex Guerra, Andrew Starnes, David Harpen, Eric Friese and Hunter Morgan.

Despite an equitable shot attempts margin (20 for Wofford, 14 for VMI) and several close scoring opportunities for the Keydets, the Terriers capitalized on open shots at the net en route to the victory.

Both teams went scoreless until the 36th minute when Wofford’s Will Puckett scored his fourth goal of the season off an assist from Nicky Watson to put the Terriers up, 1-0. Watson would put a goal in himself six minutes later (41:39) by deflecting the ball off the right post and into the net for a 2-0 Wofford advantage at the break.

Wofford would strike twice early in the second half to put the game out of reach at 4-0 and later added two scores throughout the remainder of the game for the 6-0 road victory.

Playing in his final game at Patchin, Starnes led the Keydets with three shots on the day, including one on goal. Morgan and Harpen each got off two shots while five others tallied one shot attempt.

Terrier goalie Garrett Closs was given the win with one save while Guerra took the loss with four saves in a complete game.

VMI will play in the Southern Conference Tournament next weekend with a likely Saturday matchup on Nov. 7. Follow vmikeydets.com to learn of the opponent, date and time as the Keydets will look for a strong start to the tournament.
