In the first collegiate soccer game at Audi Field, UVA (1-0-1) and Maryland (0-1-2) could not find the back of the net in a scoreless draw. The Cavaliers put forth their second clean sheet of the young season.
Cavalier goalkeeper Colin Shutler (Broadlands, Va.) made seven saves and was credited with his second shutout of the season. The seven saves by Shutler were the most by a Virginia goalkeeper since Jeff Caldwell denied seven chances vs. Notre Dame on Oct. 14, 2016.
“Playing in a venue like this was great for both programs,” head coach George Gelnovatch. “I think it’s easier to have the mentality to not concede this time of year, especially when the offense isn’t clicking and we’ve only been together for a few weeks. I think the same is true for Maryland, they’re a good team and they’re going to score goals.”
The Maryland attack outshot the Cavaliers, 15-11 including a 3-2 advantage in the two overtime sessions. The Terrapins have yet to score a goal through three games this season. Virginia held a 6-5 edge in corner kicks in the match.
The meeting between Maryland and Virginia was the 80th in a series history that began in 1941 and flourished when the Terrapins were members of the ACC up until 2015. The Terrapins are now unbeaten against the Cavaliers in the last six tries. The tie is the 10th between the two programs.
Coming into the contest, Virginia was one of 10 teams in the country to not surrender a goal this season. The last time Virginia recorded back-to-back shutouts to start the season was in 2007. The school record for shutouts to begin a season is five, set back in 2005.
Virginia will open up Atlantic Coast Conference play on Friday (Sept. 7) when they host Virginia Tech at Klöckner Stadium. The contest will air live on ACC Network Extra and is set for a 7 p.m. start.
