Lynchburg College held off a late Bridgewater rally Saturday afternoon to defeat the Eagles, 66-62, in ODAC action.
Lynchburg jumped out to an early 13-1 lead as the Eagles failed to score a field goal in the first eight minutes of action.
The Hornets took their biggest lead of half on a layup by Austin Chillemi with 3:43 left, making the score 32-15.
The Eagles then caught fire and scored the final 14 points of the half to trail by just three, 32-29, at the break.
The Eagles took their first lead of the game when Ed Reddick made two free throws for a 34-33 advantage with 17:21 left.
The Hornets responded with a 6-0 run to lead 39-34, but the Eagles answered with an 8-1 spurt t to take a 42-40 lead with 12:31 left. After Lynchburg’s Harry West Jr., made one foul shot, Kenneth Waugh and Matthew Hunter knocked down back-to-back threes to give the Eagles the 42-40 lead.
Lynchburg battled back to regain the lead and stretched the margin to 12 points, 61-49, with 5:28 to play.
The Eagles refused to go away and buckets by Ronnie Thomas, Aaron Adams and Ed Reddick sparked a 6-0 run that cut the lead in half. After two Lynchburg free throws, Reddick scored again and Adams converted a three-point play to pull BC to within three, 63-60, with 34 seconds left.
After a made free throw by Chillemi, Tavis Stapleton hit two from the line to make it a two-point game, 64-62, with 31 seconds on the clock.
It was still a one possession game when Xavier Parham made 1-of-2 foul shots with 29 seconds, but the Eagles missed an opportunity to close the gap when Adams missed two foul shots with 14 seconds left.
Chillemi made the second of a two-shot foul with five ticks on the clock for the final four-point margin.
Adams led four Eagles in double figures with 14 points. Reddick and Hunter each scored 12 and Stapleton added 10.
The battle of the boards was virtually even with the Hornets finishing with a one rebound edge. Reddick led the Eagles on the glass with six.
Chillemi paced the Hornets with 20 points and Tucker Lucas scored 11. Nate Campbell pulled down a game-high 10 rebounds.
The Eagles dropped to 5-16 overall and 2-10 in the ODAC while Lynchburg improved to 13-9 overall and 7-6 in the conference.
