Brittany Lovell, RN, a nurse in the Emergency Department at Augusta Health, is the first nurse there to be awarded the DAISY Award for Extraordinary Nurses.  She was recognized for her caring attitude, her grace under pressure, and her gentle and compassionate communication with patients in stressful situations.  Cathy Deane, RN, and Molly Hileman, RN, both of the Intensive Care Unit, were also recognized.

Lovell received a certificate of appreciate, a hand-carved sculpture of ‘A Healer’s Touch’ and Cinnabons to share with her colleagues.  The monthly award is sponsored by the DAISY Foundation, a not-for-profit based in Glen Ellen, Calif., and established by family members in memory of J. Patrick Barnes, and in honor of the care he and his family received from nurses during his illness.

Lovell was nominated by a co-worker, but nurses can be nominated by colleagues, patients or patient families.  Those interested in nominating a nurse can complete a nomination form.  Forms are available at Augusta Health or by contacting Patra Reed at 540.332.5051 or

“Our nurses provide examples of compassion, caring and skill every day.  It’s important that our nurses know how much we value this work and effort, and the DAISY Foundation award is one way for us to do that,”  said Lisa Cline, Vice President of Operations and Chief Nursing Officer at Augusta Health.

Augusta Health is an independent, nonprofit community hospital with a mission to promote the health and well-being of our community through access to excellent care. In 2011, Augusta Health is the only hospital in Virginia to be recognized as a 100 Top Hospital by Thomson Reuters, receive both the Distinguished Hospital for Clinical Excellence and Patient Safety Awards from HealthGrades, and be named a finalist for the Foster G. McGaw Prize from the American Hospital Association for community service.
