uva baseballThe No. 16 Virginia baseball team was shut out, 4-0, by No. 5 Louisville Monday evening at Davenport Field. Louisville (25-7, 14-1 ACC) finished off a three-game ACC series sweep as Virginia (19-12, 6-9) was swept at home in conference play for the first time since April 13-15, 2012, by North Carolina.

Virginia’s offense was stifled by the Louisville pitching staff and limited to three hits while failing to advance a baserunner past first base. Louisville starter Josh Rogers (5-1) earned the win after pitching seven strong innings, giving up three hits and a pair of walks while striking out two.

Virginia starter Brandon Waddell (Jr., Houston, Texas) worked four-plus innings, allowing four earned runs, eight hits and a walk while striking out three. He took the loss and fell to 2-2 on the year.

Louisville took the lead with a run in the third inning as Sutton Whiting hit a one-out double and scored when Nick Solak singled to center. The Cardinals tacked on a run in the third; with two outs and runners on first and second, Waddell hit back-to-back batters with pitches to force in a run.

Louisville pushed the lead to 3-0 and knocked Waddell from the game in the fifth inning. Whiting led off with a double and scored on a single to center from Solak. After walking Corey Ray, Waddell was lifted in favor of Alec Bettinger (So., Woodbridge, Va.), who went on to work four innings.

The Cardinals scored their final run in the sixth inning when Whiting ripped his third double to left field, bringing Devin Hairston home.

Virginia remains home Wednesday for a 5 p.m. game with James Madison. A live video broadcast also will be streamed on VirginiaSports.com and is available through a Cavaliers Live subscription.
