Longwood women's lax makes it five in a row

The Longwood University women’s lacrosse team posted its fifth-straight win in 2011 and its fourth-straight National Lacrosse Conference (NLC) win of the season 20-9 over Presbyterian College in Clinton, South Carolina on Friday afternoon. Seniors Cara O’Brien|Arlington (Bishop O’Connell) and Amanda Bereznay|Gwynn Oak, Md. (Seton Keough) both tallied a game-high four goals, while O’Brien added one assist, in the Lancers’ (8-3, 4-0 NLC) third 20-point game.

Senior Kesley Dean|Centreville, Md. (Queen Anne’s), who scored the game’s first two goals, and junior Jessica Rudloff|West Chester, Pa. (West Chester East) each added a hat trick in the win, all six goals coming in the first half where Longwood netted 13. The Lancers are 5-1 on the season when scoring the game’s first goal, and they also hold the same record when scoring the game’s last, which was done so against Presbyterian via sophomore Stephanie Schenkel|Brentwood, Tenn. (Ravenwood) with 20 ticks remaining.

After Dean’s two goals, LU score four more in a row before Presbyterian’s Katie Prisco finished a chance at 22:31 to put the Blue Hose on the board. However, PC never cut the Lancer lead closer than four goals, which came in the first half when the score was 7-3 with 15:39 on the clock. From there, Longwood jumped out to an 11-3 lead when Rudloff scored all three of her goals and Dean added her third. The junior now has 22 on the year and is tied with Dean for second-most on the team. O’Brien holds steady with a team-high 33 goals.

Senior Juli Liebig|Centreville, Md. (Queen Anne’s) and junior Alicia McCarty|Bel Air, Md. (Bel Air) shared goalkeeping duties for the fourth time this season, Liebig appearing in the first 48:21 and McCarty the final 11:39. The senior collected seven saves and allowed as many goals with four ground balls, while the junior made two saves and conceded as many goals with one ground ball. With the win, Liebig surpassed her win total from 2010.
