Lionell Spruill wins Democratic Party nomination in Fifth State Senate District

virginia general assemblyDel. Lionell Spruill (D-Chesapeake) won the Democratic nomination in the race for Virginia’s Fifth State Senate District in a Saturday firehouse primary, easily defeating Del. Joseph Lindsey.

Spruill received 68.3 percent of the more than 3,200 votes cast in the primary. The Fifth State Senate District seat is open because the incumbent, Kenny Alexander, was elected mayor of Norfolk earlier this year.

Said Senate Democratic Leader Dick Saslaw (D-Fairfax), “”Lionell Spruill has been a passionate advocate for civil rights and has served his district well in the House. He is going to be a strong addition to our Caucus and we look forward to working with him in the Senate. We congratulate both him and Joe Lindsey for a well fought campaign.”
Said Senate Democratic Caucus Chair Donald McEachin (D-Henrico), “It’s always tough when two good friends face off against each other but it is humbling to know that regardless of the outcome we would gain another strong member of our Caucus. We are going to miss Kenny, but we are delighted that Lionell will be joining the Senate come November. Thank you to both Lionell and Joe for running such strong, engaging campaigns.”
