Liberty head football coach Turner Gill and assistant coach Ron Brown will be suspended from coaching for one game in response to an NCAA rules violation.
Brown will serve his suspension during the Flames’ upcoming game against Monmouth this Saturday. Gill will serve his suspension at a later date this season.
“Our football staff makes every effort to live within the guidelines and policies established by the NCAA in all areas of our program,” said Gill. “I knew it was necessary to self-report this violation once it was brought to my attention. I take full responsibility for the consequences that go along with this violation and will make sure it does not happen again.”
“Coach Brown texted an offer before August 1, not knowing that a text was considered the same as a written offer,” continued Gill. “After learning of this, he approached me with this information.”
The Secondary/Level III violation occurred when offers of aid were provided to prospective student-athletes before theAugust 1 permissible date of their respective senior years. These offers are a violation of NCAA bylaw 13.9.2.2 – “Written Offer of Aid Before the Signing Date.”
A NCAA Directive requires a one-game suspension for the identified assistant coach, as well as, the head coach of the program for this minor infraction.
“We take compliance with NCAA rules and regulations seriously, and have followed the directives mandated for this sort of violation. A culture of compliance has been clearly established by our programs which is proven by the self-reporting of NCAA violations such as this one,” said Liberty’s Director of Athletics Jeff Barber.
