Lexington: Celebrating 60 years of WREL

Chris Graham

WREL and Theater at Lime Kiln are hosting a celebration of the 60th anniversary of the debut of the Lexington radio station on Saturday night at the Virginia Horse Center.
The 5:30-10:30 p.m. gala will be a benefit for Lime Kiln.

The event is titled “Buttons and Bows” for the number-one radio hit of 1948 as performed by Dinah Shore.

WREL made its on-air debut on Nov. 14, 1948. It was primarily a music station at its birth. The station now broadcasts Fox Sports and news – and a weekly Tuesday-morning segment featuring The Augusta Free Press.

Dinner is at 7 p.m. and will be catered by The Southern Inn. At 8 p.m., on-air talent at WREL will recreate some of the first broadcast, and local performers will sing period songs.

Tickets are $50 for one, $90 for two, and can be purchased by calling Lime Kiln Arts Inc. at 540.463.7088 by Wednesday.
