Lecture on the Battle of Waynesborough at the Gateway

Contributors

WTA’s Gateway and the Waynesboro Heritage Foundation will present it second local history lecture at 7 pm on Thursday, Oct. 18.   Brig. General Bill Alexander will trace the final organized resistance in the Shenandoah Valley. The lecture is free but donations are gratefully accepted.  Doors open at 6:30 with open seating.

The Battle of Waynesborough took place on March 2, 1865.  Maj. General Sheridan with 10,000 men arrived in Staunton, taking the town over from the fleeing Confederate troops of few 2000. On March 2, the Union generals Custer and Devin moved on Waynesboro.  In the sleet and fog of that late winter day, the Army of Virginia attempted to stop the invaders and save the Crozet tunnel and the life line to Richmond.

Brig. General Alexander brings his knowledge of military tactics and local history to his subject.  His lecture will proved both a perspective on Waynesboro’s place in the history of the Battle between the States and an entertaining review of the final military action in the Shenandoah Valley.
