Koresh Dance Company to teach in community, perform at Wayne Theatre

Chris Graham

Koresh Dance CompanyThe Wayne Theatre presents the Koresh Dance Company on Thursday, Jan. 17, 2019, at 7 p.m. Tickets are $18 for students and $32 for adults.

A VIP reception ticket is also available which includes a Director’s Sparkling Toast and begins at 6 p.m.

Inner Sun, the latest Koresh work funded by the National Endowment for the Arts, is the centerpiece of this dynamic program, using text, body percussion and an eclectic blend of music, as moments of tenderness and grace alternate with humor and brash force. A collaboration between choreographer Roni Koresh, composer John Levis and spoken word artist Karl Mullens, together they explore the parallel between the earth’s inner sun and that of the human body, the human spirit. In this non-stop program, Inner Sun is performed along-side Koresh favorites including their acclaimed Bolero.

In addition to the program at the Wayne Theatre, the Koresh Dance Company will also be teaching hip hop to students at Berkeley Glenn Elementary School and Kate Collins Middle School. They will also be providing a master class to Old Dominion Studios in Waynesboro and Valley Dance Theatre in Staunton. There will be no cost to the schools or dance studios for these classes.

“The Wayne Theatre is pleased to connect with the greater community to provide engaging, educational and enriching experiences,” said Tracy Straight, executive director for the Wayne Theatre. “We are thrilled to bring this amazing dance company to the area to benefit our students and to the Wayne stage for the entire community to enjoy.”

Koresh Dance Company is recognized for superb technique, synchronization, speed, power, and emotive acuity. Founded in 1991 by Israeli-born choreographer and artistic director Ronen (Roni) Koresh, the dance company is known for its engaging performance and technically superb dancers.

The company performs critically acclaimed works in touring performances around the country. Koresh has been hailed internationally, touring to destinations including Spain, Turkey, Israel, South Korea, Mexico, and Guatemala. Over the years, Roni Koresh has developed a vast repertoire of work that ranges from explosive and passionate to intimate and restrained.

This program is sponsored in part by the Mid Atlantic Arts Foundation and the National Endowment for the Arts.
