The Shenandoah Valley Art Center, during the month of May, in the Cabell/Arehart Gallery is presenting acrylic paintings by Joan Menard.
The show, titled “Nostalgia,” is a collection of paintings that evoke sentimental memories. The images depict subject matter to which most of us relate when recalling a person, place, or event from the past. Menard intends to arouse mixed feelings of happiness, sadness, and longing when viewing her works. An opening will be held Saturday, May 5, 5:00 – 7:00 p.m. and the public is encouraged to come, meet, and talk to the artist.
In the Members’ Gallery, the theme Green will be interpreted by SVAC members through a variety of media and creative ideas. The Green theme will be carried on for the green thumb artists searching for the rare find in plants? Come scout out the SVAC Plant Sale and fundraiser May 4, 10:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m. Donated plants from the long established gardens of SVAC members will be featured. All proceeds will go toward SVAC programs.
Check out the SVAC sponsored classes for the month of May! For painters, “Acrylic Surprise” Workshop will be taught by Joy Tartter, award-winning watercolor artist. Students will be employing a variety of techniques using acrylic paints/acrylic inks and wax paper/saran wrap to create unique textures. (May 18, 4:00-7:00 p.m., May 19, 10:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m., $90)
On May 1, 8, 15, 22, & 29, from 9:00 – 10:00 a.m. in the Invitational Gallery, discover the graceful art that is Tai Chi. Gentle movements from time long ago lead to overall improvement in body, mind, and spirit. ($10 per class) All are welcome!
For the young artist, the ever popular Saturday Art for Kids is designed as a program that expands upon art offered in school or as an art experience for the home schooled. The classes are taught by artists who are amazing with kids. All supplies and snacks are included for children ages 6 – 10. On June 27, 10:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., Peg Sheridan, a watercolor artist for 39 years, will present Fog and Mist in Watercolor, a workshop for beginners and advanced students. Learn how to create striking, ethereal paintings of fog and mist! Sheridan will show you how to plan your painting, choose a color palette, and, using special techniques, paint the effects of fog. Learn the Japanese art of Raku. Get your hands into some clay and some FIRE into your life! The ceramic workshop, including handbuilding and wheel throwing, will be taught by Lynn Hilton Conyers, an Artisan Center of Virginia master clay artist, art educator and award winning artisan. This class is good for ALL skill levels and you can work independently if you like. Space is limited and the workshop fills up FAST!
