JMU women's lax knocks off Princeton

The ninth-ranked James Madison women’s lacrosse team scored five unanswered goals in the first half en route to a 10-5 win over No. 15 Princeton Wednesday evening at the JMU Lacrosse Complex.

The Dukes remained unbeaten as they improved to 5-0, while Princeton dropped to 3-1.

Redshirt sophomore Casey Ancarrow (Jarrettsville, Md./John Carroll) was the Dukes’ top goal-scorer with three, and junior Ariel Lane (Vero Beach , Fla./Vero Beach) scored twice and assisted on two goals. Senior Mary Kate Lomady (Abington, Pa./Abington) also scored two times and had an assist.

Princeton’s only multiple-goal scorer was senior Lizzy Drumm (Westbury, N.Y./Friends Academy) with two.

Lomady put the Dukes on the scoreboard just 1:53 into the match when she converted a free-position shot. After Princeton junior Cassie Pyle (Alexandria, Va./St. Stephen’s and St. Agnes) tied the game on an unassisted goal 4:08 into the game, JMU started its run of five straight goals.

The five-goal run spanned 17:31. Senior Caitlin Sullivan (Kennesaw, Ga./Harrison) scored the first goal, off a Lomady pass, with 23:28 to play. Just over a minute later, junior Monica Zabel (Ellicott City, Md./Mt. Hebron) found the net for a 3-1 Dukes lead at 22:19. Less than four minutes later Lane scored, assisted by junior Ashley Kimener (Oakton, Va./Oakton).

The fourth goal of the run did not come until nearly 10 minutes later. Ancarrow scored an unassisted goal at 9:49, and another Ancarrow goal, this time off a Lane assist, at 5:57 put the Dukes ahead 6-1.

After a free-position goal by Princeton sophomore Sam Ellis (Bryn Mawr, Pa./Radnor) at 1:50 made the score 6-2, Ancarrow scored again just before the half ended to push the Dukes’ lead to 7-2.

A Lomady score 9:00 into the second half gave JMU its largest lead of the day at 8-2, and the Dukes were not seriously threatened after that.

JMU out-shot Princeton 23-16. Dukes ‘ redshirt junior goalkeeper Alex Menghetti (Media, Pa./Penncrest) finished with eight saves, while Tigers’ senior goalkeeper Erin Tochihara (Englewood, Colo./Kent Denver) made six stops.

JMU leaders in other statistical categories included Kimener with four ground balls and junior Annie Brophy (Berwyn, Pa./Archbishop Carroll) with three. Lomady, junior Cally Chakrian (East Meadow, N.Y./East Meadow) and junior Caitlin McHugh (Westminster, Md./Mercy) each had two draw controls. Brophy, sophomore Amanda Mathews (Ellicott City, Md./Centennial) and senior Meghan Wienecke (Baltimore, Md./Towson) had two caused turnovers apiece.
