James Madison scored the game’s first 12 points and never trailed in posting a 63-52 women’s basketball win over North Carolina Wilmington Thursday night at the JMU Convocation Center.

JMU posted its seventh straight 20-win season as the Dukes improved their overall record to 20-5.  JMU has an 11-3 record in Colonial Athletic Association play and remains in sole possession of second place in the league standings.  It was the fifth straight win for the Dukes, tying the team’s longest winning streak of the season.

UNCW’s record is 15-10 overall and 8-6 in the CAA.

Dukes’ sophomore guard Kirby Burkholder (Bridgewater, Va./Turner Ashby) led all players with 18 points, all of them from 3-point range where she connected on 6-of-8 attempts.  That tied Burkholder’s career-high for 3-pointers. Junior guard Tarik Hislop (Silver Spring, Md./Paint Branch) added 17 and was the only other JMU player to score in double figures.

JMU junior forward Nikki Newman (Harrisonburg, Va./Turner Ashby) led the Dukes with 12 rebounds and six assists.  Redshirt senior forward Lauren Whitehurst (Chesapeake, Va./Indian River) added nine points on 4-for-9 shooting and had seven rebounds and four blocked shots.

The Seahawks had three players score 11 points:  sophomore guard/forward Abria Trice (Atlanta, Ga./Dutchtown), sophomore guard Alisha Andrews (Stone Mountain, Ga./Redan) and junior forward Karneshia Garrett (Hoover, Ala./Hoover).  Garrett led all players with 13 rebounds.
