Northeastern converted 20 of 25 free throws in its first-ever win over James Madison as the Huskies took a 61-50 win in Colonial Athletic Association women’s basketball Sunday afternoon at Solomon Court.

JMU’S record now stands at 20-6 and 11-4 in CAA play and the Dukes remain in sole possession of second place in the league standings.  The loss ended a five-game JMU winning streak, and the Dukes lost a road game for the first time in its last seven outings.

Northeastern’s record is 6-20 overall and 4-11 in the CAA.

The Huskies held a 23-21 lead at intermission and outscored JMU 38-29 in the second half.  Northeastern outscored JMU only 41-40 from the field but the Huskies had 20 free throws to 10 to JMU.

Northeastern’s Deanna Kerkhof led all players with 23 points, and Jamie Conroy added 12 points.  Christine Huber grabbed a game-high 13 rebounds.

No JMU player scored in double figures.  Sophomore guard Kirby Burkholder (Bridgewater, Va./Turner Ashby) and junior guard Tarik Hislop (Silver Spring, Md./Paint Branch) were the Dukes’ top scorers with eight apiece.  Junior forward Nikki Newman (Harrisonburg, Va./Turner Ashby) had a team-high 11 rebounds, and redshirt senior forward Lauren Whitehurst (Chesapeake, Va./Indian River) blocked a career-high six shots.

JMU shot only 28 percent (17-60) from the field, its third-worst shooting game of the season, and Northeastern shot only 28 percent (17-61) from the floor.
