Jerry Coulter to exhibit work at Bridgewater College

bridgewaterHarrisonburg artist Jerry Coulter will exhibit “Select Paintings” in the Cleo Driver Miller Art Gallery Sept. 2 – Oct. 1 at Bridgewater College.

An artist’s talk will be presented at 4 p.m. Monday, Sept. 9, in the Boitnott Room. An artist’s reception will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. in the Miller Gallery. The talk, reception and exhibition are open to the public at no charge. Please note, several pieces in the exhibition are nudes.

As a painter, Coulter sees a strong connection, rather than a division, between realistic and non-objective subject matter.

“My hope is that the viewer responds to the work on an esthetic, as well as an emotional, level by engaging with the various forms represented,” said Coulter.

From an early age, Coulter enjoyed expressing himself through drawing and painting. Coulter studied art at Furman University where he became interested in the human figure as a subject for his work.

He received a fellowship from Ohio University where he continued to develop his interest in figure painting and drawing and pursued an interest in non-objective painting.

After earning a master of fine arts degree, Coulter taught undergraduate and graduate students for more than 40 years.

Now retired, Coulter continues to work in his studio and teach a summer workshop at Orkney Springs, a program he has taught and directed for 26 years.

The Miller Gallery is located on the second floor of the Alexander Mack Memorial Library. The Gallery is open 8 a.m. to midnight Monday – Thursday, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Friday and Saturday and 1 to 11 p.m. Sunday.

Bridgewater College is a private, four-year liberal arts college located in the Central Shenandoah Valley of Virginia. Founded in 1880, it was the state’s first private, coeducational college. Today, Bridgewater College is home to more than 1,800 undergraduate students.
