Twenty-one state AGs are suing to prevent the Trump administration from gutting the Department of Education. Jason Miyares, Virginia’s attorney general, and a loyal MAGA lieutenant, is not among them.

President Trump’s attempt to dismantle the U.S. Department of Education threatens to strip Maryland schools of critical resources, leading to larger class sizes, fewer services for students with disabilities, and deepening inequities between well-funded and struggling districts,” said Anthony Brown, the attorney general in neighboring Maryland, where the voters had the sense to not elect a MAGA sycophant to that job.

“The impacts wouldn’t just affect grade-school students; young adults’ may not be able to pay for college with federal student loans and grants, forcing them to change their hopes and dreams. My office is taking legal action because every Maryland student, no matter their zip code, deserves a quality education, and we will not allow the federal government to abandon its duty to our children,” Brown said.

That’s what leadership looks like, folks.

And then there’s Jason Miyares, sitting quietly on the sidelines as Trump 2.0 targets the Department of Education based on the nonsense premise that the DOE is using federal funds to indoctrinate kids into woke-ism.

The reality is, the department ensures that children with special needs have access to critical resources and support, protects students from discrimination and sexual assault, and is responsible for processing financial aid for college and other post-secondary students.

Pretty woke, all of that.

What’s really going on with the Trumpers on this is, they’d prefer to block-grant the money that goes now to DOE to the states, to allow red states to give vouchers, basically, reimbursements, to wealthy conservative parents who already send their kids to religious schools.

The Trump 2.0 goal of eliminating the Department of Education puts at obvious risk the $2.6 billion Virginia gets from the DOE each year.

“Jason Miyares’ refusal to stand up for Virginia’s students speaks volumes about his priorities,” said Kelsey Carolan, a spokesperson for the Democratic Party of Virginia. “He continues to prove that no matter what, he will put his loyalty to Trump over the needs of Virginia’s students and families. Virginia deserves an attorney general who will stand up to Trump as he tries to cut essential funding for the families and students who need it the most—not someone who treats their futures as a political game.”
