The incredible rediscovery of the original Jamestown settlement of 1607, thought to have been washed into the James River long ago, is now the centerpiece of Historic Jamestowne.
On Tuesday, April 24, Dr. William “Bill” Kelso, Director of Archaeological Research and Interpretation for the Preservation Virginia Jamestown Rediscovery Project, will be giving a presentation on this excavation at the Augusta County Historical Society’s 16th Annual Banquet at the Stonewall Jackson Hotel in Staunton. The event is sponsored by Community Bank.
Dr. Kelso, one of America’s foremost historical archaeologists, specializes in Virginia’s colonial period. In 1994, Kelso and his team began excavation of the grounds and found evidence of James Fort buildings, artifacts and remains of settlers all of which had been inadvertently covered by a Confederate earthwork during the Civil War. Previously, Kelso also served as archaeology director at Carter’s Grove, Monticello and Poplar Forest. He is the author of numerous articles and books, including Jamestown: The Buried Truth; Jamestown Rediscovery I-VIII; Kingsmill Plantations: Archaeology of Country Life in Colonial Virginia; and Archaeology of Thomas Jefferson’s Monticello: Artifacts of Everyday Life in the Plantation Community.
The banquet will be held at the Stonewall Jackson Hotel and Conference Center. The evening’s activities begin at 6 p.m. with a social hour and silent auction. Dinner begins at 7 p.m. and is followed by the presentation of the society’s annual history awards and Dr. Kelso’s presentation. This year’s auction will include an array of special theme gift baskets, Civil War items, trips, tickets to plays and attractions, jewelry, books – and so much more.
Tickets are $50 per person and include the dinner and program. Patron Reserved Seating is $150 and includes two reserved tickets and program recognition.
