An altercation following a crash on Interstate 95 overnight led to the death of one man after he allegedly stepped into a travel lane and was struck by a passing vehicle.

The fatal crash occurred at approximately 1:56 a.m. on I-95 southbound at the 163 mile marker in Fairfax County.

The driver of two sedans were involved in a collision, and the occupants exited their vehicles and became engaged in an altercation, according to a report from the Virginia State Police.

As the altercation was under way, one of the male occupants stepped into another travel lane, according to police, and was struck by the driver of a Mercedes Benz SUV. The SUV stopped following the accident.

The occupant that was struck, who has not been identified, was taken to a hospital where he later died.

The crash remains under investigation.
