The Virginia Department of Transportation has postponed repairs on a sinkhole near the right shoulder of Interstate 81 southbound at mile marker 211.8 in Augusta County. The work was expected to begin this morning, but fog has caused poor visibility in the area. Repairs will likely be rescheduled for mid-October, weather permitting.
The sinkhole is about 12 feet from the right shoulder of I-81. It is located between exit 213 (Route 11) in the Greenville area of Augusta County and exit 205 (Route 606) in the Raphine area of Rockbridge County.
The sinkhole has a diameter of approximately eight feet with a depth of approximately 12 feet. VDOT has been monitoring the sinkhole since February, when it was discovered during maintenance operations. It has progressed to the point where it requires a full repair.
VDOT’s on-call contractor for these repairs is Commonwealth Excavation Inc. The sinkhole will be excavated and repaired with a rock and concrete mix, then backfilled with stone and then topped with a clay and topsoil mix. If the roadway surface is disturbed paving will also be done in that area.
