Inside the Numbers: #5 Virginia defeats Cal in OT

uva-logo-new2Virginia packs it in

At the 12:14 media timeout, I wrote on the AugustaFreePress.com live blog that the game was winnable assuming that Virginia could just play some D.

Cal led 46-37 at the time. The Bears had recorded 40 offensive possessions to that point, so they were scoring at a rate of 1.15 points per possession.

They would score 16 points the rest of the way on 24 possessions: .667 points per possession.

That’s how you win a game when you shoot 18.2 percent from the field in the first half.

Not a good night for Gill, Brogdon

More than 30 NBA scouts were credentialed for Tuesday’s game, presumably on hand to see Cal freshmen Ivan Rabb and Jaylen Brown, both of whom are projected as top five picks in the 2016 NBA Draft, if they declare.

UVA seniors Anthony Gill and Malcolm Brogdon had a chance to impress with all the note-takers looking on.

Neither likely availed themselves well.

Gill led the Cavs with 17 points, but was just 5-for-14 from the field, and obviously struggled with the Bears’ size and length in the post.

Brogdon was similarly affected by the Bears’ size on the perimeter, harassed into a 3-for-12 shooting night.

Player of the Game: Who is this Jarred Reuter kid?

Jarrett Reuter had played 17 minutes total in Virginia’s last six games. The freshman played 16 very important minutes Tuesday night, scoring 11 points on 3-of-4 shooting from the field and 5-of-6 shoting from the line.

Reuter’s +9 rating was tops on the team, as was his 162 ORating on KenPom.com.

Clean night for LP

London Perrantes is the hero because his three with 10 seconds left provided the winning points.

Perrantes was the KenPom.com MVP for Virginia with a 132 ORating. He had 10 points on 4-of-9 shooting from the field, 2-of-3 shooting from three, and LP had six assists and no turnovers in 42 minutes.
