Imagine a Day Without Water: Awareness

Chris Graham

newspaperThe City of Charlottesville, the Albemarle County Service Authority, and Rivanna Water & Sewer Authority will take part in Imagine a Day Without Water, a national campaign to educate and inspire people about the essential value and importance of water in our everyday lives.

From Oct. 6-8, organizations across the country are joining together to educate people about the challenges facing water and wastewater systems, and the need for conservation.

The City of Charlottesville, ACSA, and RWSA will be hosting an event on October 6th from 11:00 am to 1:00 pm on the Downtown Mall in front of the Free Speech Wall. Entertainment will be provided by 106.1 The Corner, and there will be water saving giveaways and information available. Additionally, an art contest for City and County students will be announced challenging them to “Imagine a Day Without Water.”

Water is often taken for granted. Clean, safe, reliable, and affordable water comes from the tap and flows down the drain without a second thought. Few realize that there is a world “under our feet” -pipes, pumps, equipment, processes, and nearly 200 people working 24/7 to treat and deliver clean, safe drinking water to our community or to clean wastewater so it can safely be returned to the environment.

“The City, ACSA, and RWSA are all excited to celebrate together the importance of water especially in a community that values and works hard to conserve water,” said Lauren Hildebrand, the City’s Director of Utilities. “The concept to ‘Imagine a Day Without Water’ is very visual and tangible, and we hope that impression engages students in the community in the upcoming student art contest. We want the community to stop and think how many of their actions each day are dependent on water, and what would happen if water were no longer available.”
