A Wall Street Journal report this week tells us how our favorite team’s coach has done against Top 25 teams. Which is significant because, well, Top 25 teams are solid teams, which is to say, not mid-majors, I-AA teams, conference cellar-dwellars, the fare at the bottom of the food chain that props up won-loss records.
Only one current ACC coach has a winning record against Top 25 teams: Jimbo Fisher at Florida State, who is 12-6 against Top 25s.
Virginia Tech coach Frank Beamer has the next best record, at 45-50-1 (.474 winning percentage). Louisville coach Bobby Petrino is 14-19 career (.424) and 4-7 (.364) at Louisville.
Georgia Tech coach Paul Johnson is 10-22 career (.313), and 10-13 (.435) at Georgia Tech.
Dabo Swinney at Clemson is 9-18 (.333). The other coach in the ACC with a .300-plus record is Mike London at UVA (4-9, .308).
For comparison, Urban Meyer, whose top-ranked Ohio State Buckeyes open at Virginia Tech on Sept. 7, is 29-12 career (.707) and 9-2 at Ohio State (.818).
Oklahoma coach Bob Stoops is 50-27 (.649). Alabama coach Nick Saban is 55-37 career (.598) and 33-14 (.702) at ‘Bama.
Steve Spurrier at South Carolina is 62-51-1 career (.548) and 19-26 at USC (.422).
And on the other end of the scale, Randy Edsell at Maryland is 1-26 career (.037) and 0-10 at Maryland.
