Home opener, finally? UVA baseball scheduled to welcome ODU on Wednesday

Chris Graham

uva baseballThe UVA baseball team again will try for its home opener, as the Cavaliers take on Old Dominion at 4 p.m. Wednesday at Davenport Field. Ranked as high as No. 1 nationally, Virginia has played its first 13 games away from home because of incessant inclement weather. UVa (12-1) has had 13 games postponed or moved to alternate sites because of the inclement weather that has plagued the nation in February and early March.

This marks Virginia’s latest home opener since the 1988 season when UVa played West Chester on March 26.

Virginia-Old Dominion Series
ODU leads the series with UVa, 30-26-2. The teams split a home-and-home series last season. The Cavaliers posted a 7-1 win over the Monarchs on April 1 at Davenport Field. The Monarchs countered with an 8-1 rout on April 29 at Harbor Park in Norfolk, snapping a four-game losing streak to UVa.

Virginia Against In-State Opponents
Since 2004, the Cavaliers have a 104-18-1 record against in-state foes. UVa was 13-2 last season versus in-state opponents.

At Long Last, the Home Opener Arrives (We Think)
If it happens, the home opener Wednesday is the latest Virginia home opener since the Cavaliers began the 1988 home slate on March 26 against West Chester. For the first time since 2003, Virginia did not play a home game in February.

UVa has thrived at home during the Brian O’Connor era. The Cavaliers finished 34-4 at home in 2014, boosting their record to 340-73 (.823) at Davenport Field since 2004. Virginia is 69-9 (.885) at home over the past two seasons.

Weather Wreaks Havoc on Home Schedule
Inclement weather has forced Virginia to postpone three midweek games and relocate three weekend series. In all, Virginia has had 13 home games altered because of inclement weather.

UVa was forced to shift its series with Marist (Feb. 20-22) to Charleston, S.C., and its round-robin tournament with Hartford and Seton Hall to Myrtle Beach. UVa’s midweek games with VCU and GW have yet to be rescheduled.

Noting Old Dominion
Old Dominion owns a 5-5 record heading into its Tuesday contest with Bryant. The Monarchs won three home games against Penn on Sunday and Monday. P.J. Higgins leads the team with a .410 batting average and nine RBI, while Connor Myers is hitting .355.

Up Next
Virginia travels to Virginia Tech this weekend for a three-game ACC series in Blacksburg. The teams are scheduled to play at 5:30 p.m. Friday, 2 p.m. Saturday and 1 p.m. Sunday at English Field.
