Motorists who frequent the Harrisonburg area will want to take into account a road closure next week at the Interstate 81 Exit 247A interchange.

The off-ramp from southbound Interstate 81 to eastbound Route 33 at the Exit 247A interchange is scheduled to be closed from 7 a.m. Thursday, Dec. 18, to 4 p.m. Friday, Dec. 19.

The closure will allow for paving operations related to construction of a new exit ramp, as part of an interchange reconstruction project.

Southbound I-81 motorists who need to reach eastbound Route 33 can take Exit 247B, turn left on South Carlton Street, left on Reservoir Street, left on Evelyn Byrd Avenue and then left on Burgess Road to return to Route 33.

Digital message signs will be in place to advise motorists of the upcoming ramp closure.

All work is weather permitting, and schedules are subject to change.

The Route 33 project is scheduled for completion in summer 2026. Additional information is on the VDOT project page.
