A Harrisonburg man is in custody on murder charges following a Monday-night shooting in Grottoes that left a woman dead.

John Franklin Myers, 44, of 3210 S. Main St., is being charged with first-degree murder and two related charges in the shooting death of Virginia Lynn Ware, 30, of 9712 Cloverdale Lane, Grottoes.

The shooting was reported by neighbors at 8:10 p.m. Rockingham County sheriff’s deputies and Grottoes town police officers arrived at the scene to find Ware lying outside unresponsive.

Witnesses said a white-male suspect had left the scene.

Arrest warrants were issued overnight for Myers, who turned himself in early Tuesday morning.

Myers is being held in the Harrisonburg-Rockingham Regional Jail without bond.
