The City of Harrisonburg is working on improvements to reduce traffic congestion and improve safety along the Port Republic Road corridor.
As part of the process, the city is inviting community members to provide feedback on its proposed solutions at an open house on Thursday, Nov. 14, from 4 to 6 p.m.
“We have funding secured to make these sections of Port Republic safer for our community members and visitors to travel,” said Tom Hartman, Harrisonburg Public Works director. “With the review of crash data and through careful evaluation, we understand there are opportunities to reduce crash conflicts along this corridor by implementing specific improvements, improvements that we look forward to sharing with the community at this open house.”
The open house will be held in Harrisonburg City Hall City Council Chambers at 409 S. Main St.
A digital questionnaire will be available online from Nov. 14 through Dec. 12 at the project links provided below.
Attendees of the open house will have the opportunity to:
- View educational displays about the improvement designs
- Speak directly with city staff about the project
- Express thoughts and questions through a public questionnaire that will be available during and after the event
Port Republic Road corridor planned improvements
- Installs a signal at Bradley Drive, with associated left turn lanes on Port Republic Road
- Adds crosswalks and pedestrian signals at Bradley Drive intersection
- Includes a concrete median between Devon Lane and Hunters Road
- Rebuilds the existing westbound bike lane as a separated bike lane and rebuilds sidewalks, where impacted by this project
- Extends the eastbound left-turn lane on Port Republic Road at Bluestone Drive to provide more space for vehicles queuing at the intersectio
- Constructs a sidewalk on the south side of Port Republic Road between Hillside and Crawford Avenues and a median on this segment
Additional information
The project is funded through the Virginia Department of Transportation Smart Scale program with contributions from an adjacent private development. The safety concerns were identified in a safety and operations study completed in 2019.
