Two people are dead in a Christmas Eve fatal crash in Halifax County.

The names of the deceased have not been released.

According to Virginia State Police, the crash occurred at 12:20 p.m. on Chatham Road, near the intersection with Leighwood Trail.

A Jeep Liberty was heading east on Chatham Road when it crossed the center line.

A Ford Explorer, heading westbound, then crossed the center line in an attempt to avoid the Jeep.

The Jeep’s driver, however, corrected, and moved back into the eastbound lanes, striking the Explorer head on.  The Jeep then caught fire.

Three passengers, including a one-month-old infant, were pulled from the Jeep by a passerby and EMS personnel.

The driver and adult passenger in the Jeep died at the scene.  Neither were wearing a seatbelt.

The one-month old, who was properly restrained, was flown to an area hospital, as well as the driver of the Explorer.  The driver of the Explorer was wearing a seatbelt.

The crash remains under investigation, according to VSP.
