Instead of trashing unwanted pumpkins after Halloween, Albemarle County and Charlottesville residents are invited to “smash” them.

The 8th annual Great Pumpkin Smash, hosted by the Rivanna Solid Waste Authority, is offered at the McIntire Recycling Center Nov. 5 through Nov. 10.

The event provides a convenient way for residents to dispose of unwanted seasonal pumpkins, even take out a little frustration, and in turn, help reduce the amount of waste going into the landfill.

A self-serve recycling container for pumpkins will be available for residents; all smashed pumpkins will be delivered to a composting facility.

Pumpkin composting is free of charge.

The recycling center is located at 611 McIntire Road in Charlottesville.

Beginning Nov. 3, the McIntire Recycling Center will close at 5:30 p.m. to coincide with the earlier sunsets.
