Generals beat Braves again

We knew these Waynesboro Generals could win 10-9 games. We didn’t know they could win 3-2 games.

Generals pitching held Staunton hitting largely in check as Waynesboro eeked out a 3-2 win at Kate Collins Field Thursday night.

“This is a real baseball game right here. This is down to the wire, and everybody is coming up big, doing their part,” said right fielder Devin Smith, who came up biggest of all with a one-out bases-loaded single that scored Brandon Glazer from third base with the eventual winning run.

It was Smith’s third hit of the night, and he also robbed Staunton hitters of two likely extra-base hits with nice running catches in the field.

Winning pitcher Kyle Allen (1-1) also came up big, posting 1-2-3 innings in the seventh and eighth after entering the game with a 15.18 ERA.

“I was ready to go out there and throw strikes and help get a win for my team, and that’s what I went out there and did,” Allen said.

Starting pitcher Adam Curtis was solid in his six-inning stint, giving up two runs on seven hits with two strikeouts and two walks.

Staunton reliever Luke Leeth (0-2) took the loss, giving up a run on two hits in two innings out of the Braves bullpen.

The win was the third for Waynesboro in three games with Staunton in 2012 and gives the Generals 12 wins in the 13 games the two have played in the past two seasons.

Waynesboro is on the road Friday night at Covington before returning home for a three-game homestand that begins Saturday night with a game against the New Market Rebels. First pitch is at 7 p.m.
