Gas utility plans burn off tonight on Route 29 north of Rio Road

route 29Charlottesville Gas will clear the natural gas remaining in an old underground pipe using a controlled burn early Wednesday morning. The burn will take place in the median of Route 29 across from the Albemarle Square entrance, just north of Rio Road. It will begin between 1 a.m. and 2 a.m. and last about 30 minutes to one hour.

The pipe is part of the underground utility infrastructure that was relocated to make way for the Route 29/Rio Road grade-separated intersection. The “burn off” will clear the old pipe of any natural gas still in the pipe before it is sealed shut at both ends.

The controlled burn poses no risk to the public but motorists traveling through the area on Route 29 may notice the flame during the burn. Charlottesville Gas, Lane-Corman Joint Venture and Virginia Department of Transportation personnel will be on the site to monitor the operation.
