Staff Report

Opening Statement: We have another tough football game this week. When you look at NC State, they have given up some points, but they have given them up in different ways. I know Maryland had an interception for a touchdown and a kickoff return for a touchdown. The other teams have had some great field position. Clemson did that a couple of times, taking the ball deep in their territory. So they have given up some points, but if you look at their front four, they are very good. They have some youth in their secondary. This team, if you look at them play, it is a good football team. Offensively, they are an outstanding football team. Wilson is outstanding with 26 touchdown passes and a 58 percent completion percentage, 2,500 yards and averaging 253 yards passing per game. They have tall wide receivers and spread the ball around. They have a good offensive line, if you look at them, this is a good football team and will be another tough football game coming up.

Q: Has Wilson surprised you a little bit, not being heavily recruited out of high school?
Beamer: He had baseball going on too, I think [some people were thinking] was he going to go play baseball too. He is an outstanding quarterback with a very accurate arm. He keeps a lot of plays alive and is athletic. He is just a tremendous football player.

Q: Do you like playing big games on neutral fields, after hearing about this Cincinnati game being played at FedEx Field in 2012?
Beamer: Yeah, certainly being able to play at FedEx, you like that. Those people are good to work with. Our fans that turned out for the Maryland game show that we have a lot of fans up in that area, and there are a lot of people that support the Hokies that can get there. I think that is a good thing for us.

Q: With what Cam Martin has gone through in his four years here, how nice is it to see him off on senior day?
Beamer: I think Cam is a special guy. I think a lot of him. He is a team player all the way. The knee is just not the same; he can’t function as he could at one time. But he made a couple great plays against Maryland on Saturday. He is a guy you are really proud of and are happy he is on your football team. He is a steady, solid individual, and has been a good football player for us.

Q: Can you talk about the backups and how they played in their opportunity against Maryland?
Beamer: That second offensive line got in there and they looked athletic. If you look at Lanier, Nasal, Becton and Painter, they are athletic. Hopefully we go in that direction there where we get more athletic and consistent in the offensive line. David Wilson really ran hard. He almost had that thing popped a couple of times. I think he has an outstanding future also. Chris Drager made one tremendous play right before half, to tackle that quarterback, and I am not sure we would have gotten him on the ground if it hadn’t been for him.

Q: Can you talk about David Wilson a little bit more?
Beamer: It is an evaluation every week, and he just has to continue to improve and build up confidence in himself. I think he has that, and the confidence of the coaching staff here. When the opportunity comes we want to get him in there. Trust me, we want to get him in the ball game, I think he is a special talent and will be a special player. We want to get him in the football game.
