Chris Graham

Smith Ellen Jan-NelThe Waynesboro Police Department has arrested a Waynesboro woman on embezzlement charges stemming from a five-day stealing spree last spring when she stole over $12,000 from the Fast Auto Loans branch that she used to manage.

Officers arrested Ellen Jan-nel Smith, 31, on Feb. 6 on four counts of felony embezzlement.  In late May 2013, senior managers from Fast Auto Loans, 1220  W Broad Street, reported that Smith, who was then the store manager, could not account for four days of deposits. When confronted with the issue of the missing money by her superiors, Smith resigned from her position.  She had been employed there for a couple of years.

The investigation continued for several months before the warrants were obtained.

Smith is free on bond.
