Fishburne Military School varsity basketball wins Caisson Classic

Fishburne Military School held off Fork Union Military Academy 78-74 in a thriller in the championship game of the FMS Caisson Classic on Monday.

fms-logoFMS led by two at the half, 33-31, after trailing FUMA by as many as nine earlier in the half. The second half was a back-and-forth affair. The Caissons led by one, 75-74, with 15.3 seconds to go. Robert Smith hit three of four free throws in the final seconds to seal the final result.

Smith had a game-high 29 points. Kian Tate and Hunter Couchot also scored in double digits with 18 and 13, respectively.

On Friday, in the opener to the Classic, Fishburne broke open a close game at the half to win 84-60 over Massanutten Military Academy.

MMA led by as many as 12 before Fishburne closed the first half on a 10-2 run to cut the deficit to two at 32-28. The Caissons then outscored Massanutten 56-28 in the second half to roll to victory.

Smith had a team high 20 points while Tate and Couchot had 17 each. Cederick Ross scored in double digits as well with 14.

FMS won the Caisson Classic for only the second time in the tournament’s 10-year history. Smith, Tate, and Ross were all named to the All-Tournament team, and Couchot was named Tournament MVP.
