bridgewaterEric Kniss, instructor of art at Bridgewater College, will exhibit “Recent Works: Sculpture and Drawing” Jan. 4 – Feb. 3 in the Cleo Driver Miller Art Gallery on the college campus.

An artist’s reception will be held 5-7 p.m. Monday, Feb. 1, with an artist’s talk at 5:30 p.m. Both events will be in the Miller Art Gallery. The talk, reception and exhibition are open to the public at no charge.

The exhibition consists of graphite and mixed-media drawings and kaolin installations.

Kniss creates forms and patterns by sifting kaolin, a very fine white clay, onto the floor.

“Recent Works: Sculpture and Drawing” explores connections/distinctions between these two modes of working. “For several years, I have thought of these two genres as distinctly different and autonomous,” said Kniss. “More recently, I have begun to sense the possibility that there may be undercurrents of ideas and ways of thinking/making that are more interrelated than I realized.”

Kniss earned a B.F.A. in ceramics from Bethel College in North Newton, Kan., and an M.F.A. in sculpture from the University of North Carolina at Greensboro.

He was a 2015 Fellow at Hambidge Center for Creative Arts and Sciences in Rabun Gap, Ga.

His work has been exhibited in Michigan, New York, North Carolina, Pennsylvania and Virginia.

The Miller Gallery is located on the second floor of the Alexander Mack Memorial Library. The Gallery is open 8 a.m. to midnight MondayThursday, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Friday and Saturday and 1 to 11 p.m. Sunday.

Bridgewater College is a private, four-year liberal arts college located in the Central Shenandoah Valley of Virginia. Founded in 1880, it was the state’s first private, coeducational college. Today, Bridgewater College is home to more than 1,800 undergraduate students.
