James Madison’s three-point attempt in the final 10 seconds fell off as Duquesne held on for a 90-88 overtime men’s basketball win on Monday night in the opening day of the Duquesne subregional in the 2012 Progressive Legends Classic at the A.J. Palumbo Center.
DU picked up its first win of the season to improve to 1-2 while JMU fell to 0-2.
After rallying to force overtime, the score was tied at 86-86 in the extra session when Derrick Colter hit a layup with a minute to go to take the lead for Duquesne. After JMU came up empty, the Dukes were forced to foul and Jerry Jones responded with a pair of free throws.
Madison kept fighting and got a layup from senior guard Devon Moore (Columbus, Ohio/Northland), before he fouled out on the next possession. Colter missed both free throws to open the door for JMU. With 10 seconds left, freshman Andre Nation’s (Plant City, Fla./Faith Baptist Chrstian) missed a three-point attempt from the right wing, and JMU was unable to corral the loose ball for another attempt as the clock expired.
Both teams had balanced scoring as senior forward Rayshawn Goins (Cleveland, Ohio/Glenville) had 20 points and a career-high 15 rebounds for JMU. It was second straight 20-point game, fourth career, and his seventh career double-double. Nation totaled 19 points while hitting three of his six tries from the arc.
James Madison also got 14 points from senior guard Alioune Diouf (Powder Springs, Ga./McEachern), who had just one career double-figure game previously. Moore had 13 points, five assists and five rebounds.
Guard Sean Johnson was the high scorer for Duquesne with 20 points on 6-of-9 shooting.
Quevyn Winters had 19 points and seven boards while recording a personal stretch of 12 straight points in the second half. Colter, Jerry Jones and P.J. Torres each had 12 points for the home team with Colter posting seven assists and Jones adding five assists plus four steals.
Duquesne sat in front for the majority of the game, including its eight-point halftime advantage. It led 61-53 at the 12:19 mark before Madison began its run. The Dukes reeled off 16 straight points to climb out of the deficit and grab a 67-61 lead.
Duquesne’s hole didn’t last for long as it moved back in front with just over five minutes remaining and built the margin to seven at 81-74 with 2:50 to go.
Nation’s third three-pointer of the game made it 81-79 with 1:20 to go. Following a turnover, Moore hit two free throws with 39.4 seconds to go. Duquesne’s final possession included three looks at the basket, but none of them fell as JMU held on to send the game to overtime.
In overtime, JMU grabbed an 84-81 lead before posting three consecutive empty possessions with Duquesne moving in front 86-84. It looked like there would be a fourth empty possession but Goins grabbed an offensive rebound and picked up the putback on a pair of missed free throws. That set the stage for Colter’s layup as Duquesne went on to record the win.
JMU had shot lights out in the second half before going cold in overtime. The Dukes were 12-for-24 (.500) from the floor in the second period while hitting 5-of-9 (.556) from the arc and 16-for-20 (.800) at the charity stripe. However, Madison was just 3-for-9 from the field in OT, 0-for-3 from the arc and 1-for-4 at the foul line.
For the game, Duquesne shot 53 percent while JMU was at 45 percent. The home Dukes also made 11 threes (11-for-25). JMU held a 39-33 advantage in rebounding and couldn’t take full advantage of Duquesne’s 18 turnovers.
Duquesne grabbed the early momentum, building a 12-4 lead in the first three and a half minutes. JMU fought from behind most of the period, keeping it within a few possessions as the freshman guard trio of Ron Curry, Andre Nation and Charles Cooke accounted for nine straight points over one stretch.
Trailing 32-27, Madison finally knotted the score at 32-32 on a Curry trey and a Goins layup with five minutes to go. However, Duquesne responded quickly with an 8-0 run and carried a 44-36 advantage into the break.
Freshman guard Ron Curry (Pennsauken, N.J./Paul IV) led a balanced JMU effort with eight points in the half. Nation had seven while Diouf added six and redshirt-senior guard A.J. Davis (Columbus, Ohio/Harmony Community) and Goins each contributed five. Johnson led Duquesne with 15 in the first session.
The Progressive Legends Classic continues Tuesday at the A.J. Palumbo Center with JMU facing Youngstown State at 4:30 p.m. The Penguins fell to North Dakota State on Monday 83-80, also in overtime.
