Diekvoss, Smithen to transfer from Richmond basketball program

ur-spiders1Richmond men’s basketball freshmen Chandler Diekvoss and Kadeem Smithen will be transferring from the program, head coach Chris Mooney has announced.

“We would like to thank Kadeem and Chandler for their contributions to our program,” Mooney said. “They represented Richmond with integrity, and worked hard on the court and in the classroom. We support them as they begin the next chapter of their college careers.”

A native of Ajax, Ontario, Smithen played in 23 games in 2014-15 averaging 3.6 minutes per contest and scoring 11 points. He grabbed eight rebounds and dished five assists.

“I am really appreciative of the opportunity at the University of Richmond,” Smithen said. “However, I will be continuing my basketball career and education at another institution.  I had a great experience here and wish my teammates and the staff the best of luck.”

Diekvoss came to Richmond from De Pere, Wis., and West De Pere High School. He sat out this season with the intention of redshirting, contributing through scout team practices.

“I am looking forward to the next opportunity,” Diekvoss said. “I want to thank everyone associated with the Richmond basketball program that supported me while I was here.”

The Spiders finished the 2014-15 season with a 21-14 record and a trip to the NIT Quarterfinals. Four of the team’s five starters will return next season.
