UVA Athletics announced tonight that offensive lineman Wallace Unamba has been dismissed from the UVA Football program “due to violation of team policy.”
“There will be no further comment,” according to the press release announcing the dismissal.
Unamba had transferred to Virginia from Kentucky, where he had spent the spring after playing in 2024 at New Mexico for former ‘Hoos coach Bronco Mendenhall.
Unamba, a 6’4”, 330-pounder, got a 64.0 Pro Football Focus grade for his work in the 2024 season, in which he logged 699 snaps, most of them at right tackle, allowing a total of nine QB pressures, and notable, not allowing a sack, on 395 pass-blocking snaps.
The 2024 season at New Mexico was Unamba’s lone full season at the D1 level.
Unamba was the starter at right tackle in Week 1, but only played 20 snaps in the 48-7 win over Coastal Carolina before leaving with an injury.
He had been expected to be available for coach Tony Elliott this weekend when the Cavaliers host Washington State.
Jack Witmer, a 6’7”, 306-pound grad senior, has gotten the bulk of the snaps at right tackle since – going for 351 snaps, with a 56.8 PFF grade.
Back to Unamba: I ran a check of the Virginia online court information system website, and came up with two relatively minor offenses – a reckless driving charge and a charge for operating a vehicle with a radar detector device, both dated to July 2 in Henrico County.
Both charges are listed as “dismissed” following hearings on Sept. 30.
That can’t be whatever this is about.
