Presumptive Republican gubernatorial nominee Ken Cuccinelli stood idly by while a former top campaign contributor was pursued in Ohio for alleged donor fraud.
That’s the charge from Virginia Democrats, who on Tuesday highlighted the prosecution in Ohio of Bobby Thompson, whose charity, the U.S. Navy Veterans Association, allegedly defrauded voters in several states, including Virginia.
“As Ohio’s attorney general brings Bobby Thompson to trial for his crimes in Ohio, Virginians are right to wonder why Ken Cuccinelli has sat on his hands for three years despite the crimes he committed here in the Commonwealth,” said Brian Coy, spokesman for the Democratic Party of Virginia. “A past affiliation with Thompson didn’t stop Ohio’s attorney general from pursuing this criminal aggressively, why did ours pass the buck after Virginians were defrauded?”
Thompson faces multiple counts of theft, money laundering, corruption and identity fraud in the case in Ohio, which was scheduled to begin on Monday. The Virginia Office of Consumer Affairs said in a 2011 report that Thompson and his U.S. Navy Veterans Association defrauded Virginians of more than $2 million over a five-year period.
Charges have yet to be brought in Virginia against Thompson, who donated $55,500 to Cuccinelli’s 2009 attorney general campaign.
