David Ferreira of Waynesboro won Best Actor in the Scares That Care Weekend Film Festival in Williamsburg last month for his work in a local indy movie.
Ferreira had the starring role in “A Convenient Store,” written and directed by Raphine resident Susan M. Connor.
The short, starring Ferreira along with local actors David Witt and Ryan Daniel Thompson, and featuring Linda Witt, Josh Buckland, Carol Shull, Joel Bugden, Lukas Mäks, Keifer Conner, Merlin Bradbury and Susan Conner, revolves around the tale of a small-time robber who decides to hit a convenience store on Halloween.
In a twist, the unfortunate thief, Ed, ends up behind the counter waiting on customers in a Halloween heist spent in retail hell.
“A Convenient Store” was filmed in Staunton this past spring using local actors and an all-local crew. Produced by Short Box Entertainment, the collaboration of Susan Connor and her husband, Ike Cook, the film is among a growing body of work for the local company, which also produced a paranormal documentary series for local ghost hunting team in Fishersville, the Twisted Paranormal Society.
Two of those episodes won awards at Scarefest Film Festival held at Louisville, Ky., in 2015.
