Cross Country: ‘Hoos open season with sweep at UVA Duals

UVA AthleticsThe Virginia men’s and women’s cross country teams opened the 2018 season on Saturday (Sept. 1), sweeping the UVA Duals at Panorama Farms. The No. 17 Virginia men’s team defeated Norfolk State 15-30 in the competition, while the women’s team topped Norfolk State 20-35 and James Madison 18-37.

The Cavalier men captured the top five finishes as junior AJ Ernst (Marblehead, Mass.) led the squad with a time of 12:05.41. Junior Randy Neish (Glastonbury, Conn.) finished second with a time of 12:10.64, while sophomore Rohann Asfaw (Rockville, Md.) placed third with a time of 12:14.59. Redshirt junior Johnny Pace (Chantilly, Va.) and sophomore Harry Monroe (Alexandria, Va.) rounded out the scoring five with a fourth and fifth-place finish, respectively. Pace recorded a time of 12:31.47 as Monroe ran a time of 12:34.94.

In the women’s race, freshman Abbey Green (Bethesda, Md.) finished second overall with a time of 14:31.73. Freshman Helena Lindsay (Yokohama, Japan) finished third with a time of 14:44.75, while freshman Emma Wolcott (Leesburg, Va.) and sophomore Kiera Bothwell (Springfield, Va.) placed fifth and sixth, respectively, with Wolcott recording a time of 14:51.65 and Bothwell running a time of 14:59.49. Sophomore Libby Davidson (Lynchburg, Va.) was the fifth finisher for the Cavaliers, placing seventh in the meet. She captured a time of 15:05.46.

Virginia will return to action on September 14, hosting the Virginia/Panorama Farms Invitational at Panorama Farms in Earlysville, Va.
