The Virginia Department of Health is reporting that cases of COVID, the flu and RSV in the state are low and stable, according to a new dashboard set up to track COVID, the flu and RSV.
The dashboard was launched Tuesday to give a comprehensive view of trends across the state.
The dashboard shows that RSV and the flu are not rampant in Virginia yet, and COVID-19 emergency room visits are trending down for the weekend ending Sept. 7.
“We believe this new resource will empower Virginians with the information they need to make informed decisions to protect themselves and their loved ones during respiratory illness season,” said Karen Shelton, MD, state health commissioner.
The dashboard shows for the week ending Sept. 7:
- COVID-19: 2.7 percent of all emergency department visits (trending down)
- Influenza (flu): 0.1 percent of all ED visits (stable)
- Respiratory Syncytial Virus (RSV): 0 percent of all ED visits (stable)
Respiratory illnesses have been highest in the Central Health District which includes Chesterfield, Powhatan, Greensville, Emporia, Charles City, New Kent, Henrico, Amelia, Prince Edward, Richmond, Halifax and surrounding areas.
The dashboard also shows there have been 65 deaths associated with COVID-19, influenza and RSV in the past six weeks. It identifies which viruses are circulating, including seasonal flu subtypes, and tracks outbreak trends by setting, such as, in schools, daycares and nursing homes.
Vaccination coverage rates for respiratory viruses are also displayed offering a glimpse of community protection levels across the Commonwealth.
“By staying informed and taking preventive measures — such as keeping up with vaccines, improving air quality, covering coughs and sneezes, washing hands frequently, and staying home when sick — everyone can contribute to reducing the spread of illness,” Shelton said.
