court square theatreWomen in Focus, a free event scheduled Sunday, March 24 at 2:30 pm at Court Square Theater, focuses on women’s issues through the use of art, poetry, music, storytelling, and presentations from female professionals in various fields. The annual multi-media event is sponsored by Arts Council of the Valley and its Court Square Theater. VMRC is the event sponsor.

Women in Focus 2019 concentrates on female caregivers and healthcare, highlighting Harrisonburg and Rockingham area resources. Women taking care of children, aging parents, and/or infirm spouses often become isolated and over-burdened as they work to “do it all.” This program examines the often overlooked side of caregiving: the needs of the caregiver, and discusses preventative screenings for physical well being, as well as how to maintain mental health during trying times.

Keynote speaker Paloma Saucedo is a mother of three and a social worker from Saltillo, Coahuila, Mexico. She has participated in health care access initiatives including Promotoras de Salud, Community Health Workers; volunteered as a Doula and health interpreter at Sentara Rockingham Memorial Hospital; and facilitated ‘Know Your Rights’ trainings for the local immigrant community. Among other highlights of the afternoon are Laura Toni Holsinger of United Way and the acoustic duo Spectator Bird.

Share your caregiving experience by submitting a short non-fiction piece to be read anonymously at the event. For details, visit valleyarts.org; and click on Court Square Theater/Performances. If your organization is in the field of caretaking or supporting families, please contact Britney Mongold & Jessica Young at [email protected] to see how you can get involved.

Women in Focus 2019 takes place at Harrisonburg’s Court Square Theater Sunday, March 24 at 2:30 pm. This is a FREE event, thanks to the sponsorship of VMRC. Please visit valleyarts.org or call 540.433.9189 for more information – or to become involved.
