Commonwealth Transportation Board awards contract for I-81 Exit 310 interchange

i81-headerThe Commonwealth Transportation Board (CTB) awarded a contract for the Interstate 81 exit 310 interchange project located in the Winchester area of Frederick County.

General Excavation Inc. (GEI) of Warrenton, Va. was awarded a contract valued at nearly      $25 million with completion scheduled for May 2018.

This project will reconstruct the interchange ramps on I-81, exit 310, at the southern end of Route 37. The new interchange will feature a new “spread diamond” configuration”, which will widen and spread the ramps outward from their current intersections with Route 37. The project will extend existing turn lanes and add dual right- and left-turn lanes to improve traffic flow on the ramps and on Route 37 and Route 11.

The expanded configuration will relocate and connect Route 642 and Route 847 with a segment of Route 37 to be built east of I-81. West of I-81 the project will modify the ramps at the Route 37 interchange with Route 11.

Construction details will be announced once a schedule is finalized with GEI. There will be extensive VDOT public outreach concerning traffic management plans, potential impacts to travelers and project progress.

Today’s award is phase one. Future phase two may include a partial cloverleaf loop and/or widening of the Route 37 bridge over I-81. All phase two work depends on future traffic demand and available transportation funding.
