Barbara Bates Smith returns to WTA’s Gateway with her new solo performance, Civil War: Agate Hill to Appomattox. The Thursday, Aug. 9th performance at WTA’s Gateway will bring the voices of a trio of women who were impacted by the War Between the States. The performance is at 8 pm at 329 West Main in Downtown Waynesboro.
Barbara Bates Smith brings a unique and varying perspective on the Civil War with her performance of Lee Smith’s plucky girl orphaned by the War, a young “Lincolnite” wife under threat in confederate territory and the oldest living Confederate widow. The three voices bring new and delight insights into the history of the great conflict.
Smith is an award-winning actress who has appeared in theatres throughout the country. Her solo performance of Ivy Rowe by Liz Smith in New York City resulted in an extensive touring of performances of the novelist’s other works. A “vivid storyteller,” Barbara Bates Smith draws her audience into the life of each of her characters and brings a new understanding of the world in which they lived. She is accompanied in her performances by the idyllic dulcimer music of Jeff Sebans.
