Chris Graham: Are you too busy for yourself?

AFP

312_stopthepressesDo you ever get the sense that you’re too busy to be yourself? Probably not, because you’re also too busy to do things like take stock of how things are going.

You have bills to pay, so you get up, go to work, come home, run the kids here and there, figure out a few minutes to eat here and there, go to bed, repeat.

This is day after day after day after …

It’s hard to do this, but you have to do it. Slow down.

Whatever age you are, count backwards from 80, and do the math. That’s how many years you have left, give or take.

Want to live them doing the same thing every day, every week, every year?

Everybody’s working for the weekend. That’s what the song says. We love our week or two of vacation. The rest of it is what we do.

I’m not one that says live every day like it’s your last, because that’s just not realistic. But that being the case, you have to have some reason for getting out of bed in the morning, and something to look forward to when you go to bed at night, other than just surviving.

What did you want to be when you grew up? Are you doing that now? What’s holding you back from doing it now?

If it’s you, and it is you, what can you do to change course?

It might seem counterintuitive, but you need to slow down.

Take stock, think about where you are, where you want to be, how you can get there. Maybe it’s grad school, maybe it’s starting a small business, writing the book you’ve had in your head for years and never had the time, taken the time, to put to paper.

There are a million of things it could be.

Take the time to figure it out.
