Charlottesville names Andrew Baxter as new fire chief

cville fire chiefCharlottesville City Manager Maurice Jones has named Andrew Baxter as the new city fire chief.

Since 1995, Chief Baxter has worked for the Henrico County Division of Fire, where he served as a firefighter, training coordinator, EMS captain, station captain and battalion chief before being appointed Assistant Chief of Professional Services.

As Assistant Chief, he oversees administrative functions, including budget, training, personnel and firefighter health wellness and safety. Additionally, he represented Henrico Fire in the development of the Henrico Crisis Intervention Team (CIT), developed and implemented recruitment and retention strategies to improve departmental diversity, and led the effort to develop Henrico Fire’s first-ever cancer prevention policy.

Chief Baxter holds a Bachelor of Science in Nursing from the University of Virginia and recently completed the Executive Fire Officer Program at the National Fire Academy.

“Andrew’s depth of experience in the field of fire service and his familiarity with the Charlottesville community have prepared him to lead one of the best fire departments in the nation,” said Mr. Jones. “I am confident Andrew will work closely with our talented firefighters to build on the department’s many achievements.”

“I am humbled and honored to have been selected to lead the Charlottesville Fire Department,” said Chief Baxter. “Our family has called the Charlottesville area home for many years and I am excited to have the opportunity to serve the citizens of this outstanding community.”

He will begin work with the City of Charlottesville on September 14, 2015.
