A fire at U-Heights on Friday displaced 31 people, and one police officer was treated on the scene for smoke inhalation responding to the fire.

Albemarle County Fire Rescue and the Charlottesville Fire Department responded to the report of a fire at the U-Heights apartment complex at 2:16 p.m.

The fire impacted 12 apartment units. All of the residents on the premises at the time of the fire were able to safely self-evacuate.

ACFR also rescued eight pet birds from one unit.

The American Red Cross is assisting the displaced residents and their animals.

The cause of the fire is currently under investigation by the Albemarle County Fire Marshal’s Office, but does not appear suspicious in nature.
