The City of Charlottesville has a new director of social services, Leon Henry, plucked from UVA Health, where he had most recently served as manager of clinical social work.

The Bronx native also held roles at UVA Health as a clinical social work supervisor and psychotherapist, and before that, he worked in child welfare for 13 years at the Massachusetts Department of Children and Families.

“I always lead with my heart and choose to use my voice in times that are difficult or when others don’t always feel comfortable speaking up,” Henry said.

These will be trying times, with the Trump/Musk administration doing everything it can to dismantle the social safety net.

In case you’re wondering: no, not a DEI hire.

Henry managed a department of 70 clinical social workers and two supervisors at UVA Health.

On top of that, completed the UVA Cornerstone Leadership Program, the Health Leadership Institute of UVA’s Medical Center Leadership Program, and he’s a member of the Leaders Lab of Greater Charlottesville.

Henry, a Licensed Clinical Social Worker, and holds a bachelor’s degree in wellness management from Oswego State University, and a master’s degree in social work from Westfield State University.

Henry started on the job on Feb. 3.

His goal: “I want to help children and families break down barriers to create opportunities for people so they can have progressive lives that they can be proud of. I will always meet people where they are and be creative when it comes to problem solving. When you stay curious, anything is possible.”

Making the case for universal health care: The message is the message

Republicans use framing to deride universal health care when they use the terms “free health care” and “socialized medicine.” UHC is neither free nor socialized medicine, but the terms stick.
