Central Shenandoah EMS Training Center receives funding

Chris Graham

newspaperCentral Shenandoah EMS Council’s American Heart Association Community Training Center will continue to offer local CPR, First Aid and advanced cardiovascular care programs thanks to the gracious donations and grants from local hospitals. For the current calendar year, Augusta Health donated $10,000.00, Bath Community donated $4,000.00, Carilion Stonewall Jackson Hospital donated $3,500.00 and Rockingham Memorial Hospital’s Foundation has granted $10,000.00. These monies allow the CSEMS’ American Heart Association Community Training Center to provide training to our community.

Augusta Health, Bath Community and Carilion Stonewall Jackson hospitals recently renewed their CSEMS’ AHA CTC yearly support contracts. They will continue to fund CSEMS’ AHA CTC on a yearly basis. These hospitals have instructors aligned with CSEMS’ AHA CTC that provide training to the community and their coworkers. All AHA instructors must be aligned with a CTC to teach AHA courses. Instead of having a CTC at each hospital it was decided in the late 1990’s to support one local CTC, CSEMS’ AHA CTC. Rockingham Memorial Hospital’s Foundation awarded CSEMS’ AHA CTC a one-time grant for 2013. The financial support received from the local hospitals will help with the operating costs associated with the AHA CTC. They will also benefit local school systems that are aligned with CSEMS’ AHA CTC by lowering the costs of training. But most importantly, their efforts and support allow training opportunities to remain local.

The grants and donations received by CSEMS’ AHA CTC from local hospitals allowed 8,483 individuals to be training in fiscal year 2012. CSEMS’ AHA CTC trained providers in CPR, First Aid, ACLS and PALS. CSEMS’ AHA CTC has instructors in Augusta, Bath, Botetourt, Highland, Madison, Pittsylvania, Rockbridge, Rockingham, and Shenandoah counties. Those instructors provide Emergency Cardiovascular Care Training (such as CPR and First Aid) to a wide range of individuals, both healthcare professions and lay rescuers.

CSEMS’ AHA CTC offers classes to the community and businesses. A course listing can be found at www.virginiacpr.org.
